Mr Tata has confirmed that JLR is in talks with a joint venture partner, thought to by Chery, about opening facilities in China. However, he also revealed that the company is exploring whether it can manufacturer products in India.
"We are looking at manufacturing and assembling further products down the road where economies and skills of India are available. That might involve shipping products from India back to the UK," Mr Tata said at the New Delhi motor show on Thursday.
JLR, bought by Tata Motors for $2.3bn (£1.5bn), manufacturers all its vehicles in the UK at present, although it assembles Land Rover Freelander 2 vehicles in Pune, India.
However, a rapid growth in the company's sales in the last two years mean its plants are operating at close to full capacity.
The Daily Telegraph revealed earlier this week that JLR is exploring plans to double the size of its Halewood plant in Merseyside in an attempt to meet soaring demand for the new Range Rover Evoque. The demand is being driven by emerging markets such as China and India.
