Convertible Range Rover Evoque revealed

Range_Rover_Evoque_Convertible

Land Rover has revealed the first images of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible which it will show in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
The car is thought to be a thinly disguised version of the production model Land Rover is planning to bring to market.
The soft-top concept has been developed by Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern and is heavily based on the coupe version of the brand’s latest model.
"The Evoque lends itself beautifully to the idea of a convertible. This study is not a traditional convertible design execution; instead we have worked with the balance of the Evoque's lines to retain its distinctive shape and create something that is unique and, we believe, highly desirable," he said.
The car features a fully retractable roof system and a drop down tailgate.

Volkswagen reveals new city cars

Volkswagen reveals four new Up city cars

Thanks to some diminutive derivatives trading, we drive Volkswagen's Up city car in five-door, GT, electric and off-roader configurations.

Volkswagen reveals four new Up city cars
Volkswagen's new Up small car has yet to go on sale in the UK, but the company is already working on a handful of versions it aims to get to market within the next few months and years including a hot GT model and a battery electric E Up.
Ulrich Hackenburg. VW's research head, admits that the market for small diesels is slow in these tiny cars, but he is still persevering with his 800cc parallel-twin turbodiesel Up. This engine comes out of the XL1 super-eco car and is one half of a Polo 1.6-litre turbodiesel, produced in aluminium, with plasma-sprayed bores and pistons instead of iron wet liners and a balance shaft to reduce vibrations. It produces 47bhp and 88.5lb ft of torque with economy to match. Asked how soon we might get this diminutive oil burner, he grins and says "soon." In the meantime, here's our impressions of the best of the rest. VW Up five-door (on sale this autumn) It's just another set of doors, but it's hard to deny that the five-door version of Volkswagen's tiddler strikes an altogether more handsome mien as it stretches the eye along the bodywork, making it look a lot less like a Toyota Aygo/Peugeot 107/Citroën C1. Each door will cost a whisker under £200 when the Up five-door goes on sale in the UK this autumn. So that's about £8,370 for a car which looks better, is a deal more practical and that will occupy most of the market anyway.

Volkswagen E-Bugster

Detroit Motor Show 2012: Volkswagen E-Bugster

Volkswagen's 'crazy car' at the Detroit Motor Show is based on the new Beetle and called the E-Bugster.

Detroit Motor Show 2012: Volkswagen E-Bugster

"This is a crazy car, it's fun, it's sporting and it's American looking," said VW Group design head Walter da Silva at the Detroit Motor Show. It's also staggeringly badly packaged Walter, but then he is a designer.

What this unashamed battery-electric hot-rod Beetle concept tells us is that VW is serious about a Beetle Cabriolet, which will likely have a more conventional fabric hood, plus that it is serious about the Beetle R, whose one-inch wider body was also seen on the E-Bugster.

With a 28.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack parked behind the seats, the all-electric E-Bugster has a range of 110 miles, and will accelerate from 0-60mph in 10.9sec.

Also on show was the Jetta hybrid model, which is unlikely to make it to Europe where the diesel Jetta provides the same kind of fuel economy with less cost and complication.
